Tonight is the Strawberry Moon.
It is the full moon for the month of June and it’s the Strawberry Moon. No it did not look like a strawberry. Nor did it have a red color to it. Or black seeds. Or any other random and weird thing the internet loves to say is real. And no, it wasn’t the size of a skyscraper either. If it were, we would all be in for some trouble and probably the end of the world. However, tonight’s moon did not disappoint. I was entertaining guests this evening so I didn’t make it to the beach to photograph the moon rise from the horizon. I did see it peek through the trees and it was beautiful. By the time I was able to get my camera and find the best place to photograph her, she was already higher in the sky and looked “small” through my lens. To my naked eye, it was still large and bright. The kids were impressed. To my camera, it was just a sphere in the black sky staring back at me.
This is no “wow” photo, but I like it. It was shot with a Nikon D610 and an 85mm lens, f/1.8. I didn’t take my tripod out so this is me holding as still as I possibly could to not blur the image. It’s not too shabby. So what is cool about tonight? It is just another full moon, right? Well actually, tonight is special. It’s the SUMMER SOLSTICE. Hello Summer!! This is the first time since 1948 that a Full Moon has coincided with the Summer Solstice. 68 years!! SIXTY EIGHT YEARS! I didn’t look up the date for the next time these two fall on the same day as each other, but I will guess and say it is pretty far down the road. And for the “strawberry” part – well in the Almanac it states that this is the peak time for strawberry picking. I love a good excuse to take the bees somewhere. It looks like we will be picking our own strawberries from the patch very soon.
Happy First Day of Summer!!!
