Avoid These Homeschool Choices, if possible! When I started homeschooling my oldest, he was in 2nd grade. I made it 6 months before I put him in private school. I was a complete failure. When he went into 4th grade, we decided to homeschool again. I was a creature of habit because for the next two years I kept making the same bad homeschool choices!
Avoid These Homeschool Choices :
1. Schedules aren’t really necessary! Oh my word, this is psychotic. I have struggled with homeschooling because I haven’t had a schedule for the kids. I literally started making a class schedule with timed “class periods” last Monday! I am not joking. Marty called from his office and I was losing my mind. He kindly reminded me that I “wing everything” and I needed structure. Please have a schedule!! It is key to a successful school year and my first homeschool choice to avoid.
2. Stock up on school supplies. Oh, why, hello! My name is Stacy and I am addicted to school supplies. I love LOVE, L-O-V-E, school supplies. My heart flutters at the sight of freshly sharpened pencils, yellow boxes of crayons, rows of white binders, the rainbow of plastic boxes, etc. I have this desire to hoard them too! Seriously. While in Minnesota over the summer, I called my mom and asked her to get as many boxes of crayons as possible. I wanted them for a project but it didn’t work as well as planned. Now I have about 50 boxes of 24 count Crayola crayons. The addiction to school supplies has taken over an entire large, hallway closet. A CLOSET! Get what you need, not what is “cute”, smells good, or even seems necessary st the time. Trust me.
3. Work, Work, Work, Work, Work. Kids need breaks just like we do. I use to push my kids really hard every day. My goal was to get the work done, and the earlier the better. These days we start school a little bit later in the morning. Our newly started schedule allows for breaks. And guess what? We still finish earlier than we did when I would push the kids like oxen plowing the fields.
Avoid These Homeschool Choices and you will be doing great!!
