10 Days of Homeschooling On The Go | Day TWO
I am happy you have landed here.
Welcome to Day Two of the July ‘Homeschool Series’ – 10 Days of Homeschooling On The Go. Is it just me or is the summer exhausting? I have been on the go so frequently when I had originally planned to stay local and around my neighborhood. That was a joke. I barely get time to sit down and watch television in the day or at night. I don’t really see a break anytime soon either. That’s okay though.
I love traveling. But I also find that when I need to run errands or we have appointments, our work isn’t always done. This is when I will pack a bag and bring our work on the road. If you don’t homeschool, please keep reading. You could use this idea for homework or even when summer holiday may cause kids to forget what they learned over the school year. It really is necessary to keep their brains working.
Okay! So what’s what? When it comes to any type of “on the go”, we bring a book bag. It is usually Bubba’s bookbag since his is bigger and of better quality (in my opinion). First to go in the book bag is a binder. You can bring the binder they are using or create one for travel. A travel binder is cool and I will discuss that later on. Next up is a small tablet or computer. Then I bring any text books he may need and reading books. Oh – PENS and PENCILS. Lots of PENCILS.
I also throw in Rea’s work as well. She usually just needs one textbook or I make a travel binder for her as well. It’s easy for the younger grades. Bubba is going in to Middle School, so I find the older he has gotten, the more text books we own. Sometimes, you have to really think about what you want to teach if you are limited on space. The space issue comes into play when we travel with our camper or stay in hotels. I will go over those starting tomorrow.
The kid’s enjoy traveling and Bubba really helps me out when it comes to answering simple questions Rea may have. I try to teach all the work at home and only bring with us the worksheets he needs to complete in his binder. If I teach the lesson, then I am not really needed when he is doing “classwork” or “homework”. I can answer any questions or help, but if he has already been taught the lesson, it makes travel work easier for all of us.
The travel binder has become a sanity saver.
The travel binder is a small, 1 inch binder I picked up from Wal-Mart. I prefer the ones with the sheet insert ability on the front. This way, I can make a cover sheet for it and voila – we know whose binder it is. I don’t always have a plan for the week. Sometimes appointments will get rescheduled or a last minute errand will pop up. If this happens, I will take the sheets for the lesson we are working on and place them in there. I try to limit the crazy, last minute stuff. Most weeks, I will check out my schedule and plan accordingly.
Staying on top of the lesson plans really will make for an easy homeschool day if you have to travel. Most days Bubba has us busy with martial arts. He just became a black belt so we spend lots of time practicing. Rea and KB aren’t busy right now but I know the fall will land us in some sort of sport or dance class. I hope to have all their work completed before we have to go places. It isn’t always so easy with smaller ones as it is with my older one.
When you aren’t on the road or traveling somewhere, try to keep your curriculum organized and neat. This simple (yet sometimes annoying) task really makes “grab and go” days easy and headache free.
