10 DAYS OF HOMESCHOOLING ON THE GO | DAY FOUR
Homeschooling On The Go has opened the doors for my family to experience adventure and create lasting memories. Don’t get me wrong, we love to teach and travel. But the best part is when Marty and I get to teach not only our ‘bees’ but also our nieces and nephews. Day FOUR of July’s 10 Days of Homeschooling On The Go is all about our impromptu trip to Sanibel & Captiva Island in the beautifully sunny, Florida!
The fun started off when we loaded up and went to my nephew’s birthday party. We agreed to stay Friday-Tuesday, spending time in the pool and and hitting up a craft fair. We did those things. Then I got bored. That’s where all our travel comes in to play. I (or Marty) just need to have the sun shining down on us and experiencing new adventures.
Partially through the craft fair (my sister was a vendor) we loaded up all of the kids and took off. We grabbed a bite to eat and said we’d go find a beach. My sister lives 5 driving minutes from the Gulf of Mexico. It wasn’t good enough. We decided to drive over to Sanibel & Captiva Island. I’ve wanted to go here since 2005.
When we got there, Marty immediately sprang into teacher mode. He had the kids huddle around to give them marine biology lessons. I should have known his childhood of growing up in Miami and all the waterways would come in handy. The kids (and I) ended up learning more than I imagined. The best part was watching my niece and nephew, since they aren’t homeschooled, getting to have a “field trip” with family at the beach.
For most people, it’s just a day at the beach collecting shells. For us, it was a moment in time that cousins were able to share learning together while still playing and goofing off. I got to enjoy watching my husband be a teacher to other children. We were able to bond with our family and enjoy the sunshine!
Now while this story is all sentimental and sweet, it did send us on a journey to find a microscope for these adventures in the sand. It took us 3 months to find the right one and that will be covered in this series. To me, it is a “mack daddy” microscope. If you are wondering, yes, my ‘bees’ did take their work with them in the car. Marty sat in the back of the car with Bubba and they worked together. Even though it is a bummer, a 6 hour car ride helped them complete all their work for the days they were going to miss.
