Homeschooling On The Go … Destination – Washington, D.C. I absolutely love D.C. Our nation’s capital is beautiful and a must see for everyone! I mean everyone! If you ever get a chance to go to D.C., even for a day, GO. You won’t be disappointed and your children will learn more than you could teach in a year.
Marty and I have been to D.C. many times. Lucky for him, his work brings him here frequently. I don’t get that luxury but we try to get there as a family when we can. You need to see absolutely everything in the city, but to be honest, that can take up a lot of time. We were super lucky in March when we went. We seen the President and his motorcade half a dozen times. We even walked by his Cadillac. I bet we were about 100 feet away. Crazy. Don’t worry, it was guarded heavily. There was a Nuclear Summit that week and dignitaries from all over the world were in town. Insanity. Marty and I had enough of hearing sirens after all the escorts that everyone seemed to have.
If you head to D.C., use the Metro (subway) whenever you can! It’s super clean and very safe. Unless you want to rack up the steps on your FitBit, I’d recommend it. You can easily walk 5-10 miles in D.C. per day. We have done both with kids and if you have a stroller then both are easy.
All the monuments are FREE!
And the National Parks all have Junior Ranger Programs. After the kids complete them, they get Junior Ranger Badges. It’s fun. Bubba has about 30 badges from all our travels.
Rea is starting to enjoy them but KB is still a little young. Even though she is small, they let her turn in her completed packet for her own. The National Park Service is truly a great program for families. Plus it is a wonderful tool for teaching.
One of my favorite places is the Library of Congress. It’s beautiful inside and out. The ‘bees’ enjoy it too. This last trip we actually went inside the Supreme Court. That was a first for all of us. It was amazing. I do like to rub it in that I’ve been in the White House to Marty. It was back in the Clinton era but it’s still cool.
